Max simultaneous positions: how many trades the bot holds at once
Updated:
The max simultaneous positions setting limits how many trades one Snapback bot can have open at once. While the limit is not reached, the bot opens new ones; once it is reached, new signals for this bot are rejected and the reason is written to the journal.
What it means in plain words
A pump is rarely alone. When the market is hot, dozens of coins can rise at the same time. Without a ceiling the bot would open a short on every one. This setting says: no more than this many trades at once.
Why it exists
Every open trade is separate margin and separate risk, and sharp pumps often coincide in time: when the market turns up, all shorts suffer together. The limit on simultaneous positions caps that accumulated risk.
How it works in the code
Before opening, the bot counts the open positions of this particular bot. Open means every state where the trade is not yet finished: waiting for entry, placing protection, protected, replacing the stop and a position without protection. If there are already as many as the limit or more, the signal is rejected with a message like "already holding N positions".
The count is per bot, not per account. But one user cannot have more than one position per coin: the exchange merges positions by symbol, so a second trade on the same coin would blend with the first and spoil the plans of both.
Illustration of the mechanism only, not advice: the limit is 3 and 3 positions are open. A new coin rises by the required percentage, but the bot skips it until one of the three closes.
Allowed values and defaults
A whole number of at least 1. The default in the code is 8. The configuration has no upper limit, but in practice it is bounded by the total margin.
What happens if it is higher or lower
- Higher limit: more simultaneous trades, more margin in use, and a bigger effect if the market turns against all shorts at once.
- Lower limit: the bot skips signals more often, but risk is less concentrated. With a limit of 1 the bot holds one trade at a time.
How it connects to other settings
- Max total margin: another limit, but by money rather than by count.
- Entry size: multiplied by the number of trades into total margin in use.
- Daily loss limit and coin cooldown: other safeguards.
Common mistakes
- Thinking the limit applies to the whole account if it has several bots: it is counted separately for each bot.
- Forgetting that an entry that is still waiting also takes a slot.
- Assuming a large limit is safe because each trade has a stop: stops on different coins can trigger together.
Where to find it in the bot wizard
The "New bot" or "Edit" form, the "Safeguards" block, the "Max simultaneous positions" field.
Frequently asked questions
What does max simultaneous positions mean?
It is the largest number of open trades one bot can have at the same moment. Once the limit is reached, new signals for that bot are ignored until a trade closes.
What is the default for simultaneous trades?
8 in the configuration. The minimum is 1, and the code sets no upper limit.
Does an entry order that has not filled yet count?
Yes. Positions waiting for their entry count as open too, not just those already filled.
Can I have two trades on the same coin?
No. There can be only one position per coin on the account, regardless of the limit.
